This morning will be an unforgettable experience as we visit Mount Teide National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mount Teide is Spain's highest peak and a dormant volcano. Ascending to over 6,500 feet, you will see moonscapes and volcanic stone landscapes. We have also included a ride in the cable car which reaches almost to the summit of the volcano (**see below). We will enjoy lunch together at Portillo Restaurant.
This afternoon we will be surprised by the mystery of the Guanches, the ancient settlers of the Canary Islands. Travelling to the Pyramids of Güímar, an Ethnographic Park we'll see several 6-step pyramids, built from lava stone without the use of mortar. We will also take a walk through the Poison Garden, housing over 70 poisonous plant species, a very unique exhibition in the Canary Islands.
To end the tour, we will visit the Basilica in the coastal resort of Candelaria. This is dedicated to the Patron Saint of the Canaries and home of a famous Black Madonna. In the local square there are the statues of the Guanches Menceyes (Kings), the firsts inhabitants of the Canaries.
We will then drive back to our resort for an evening at leisure.
(**The cable car not recommended for those with heart problems, pregnant women and children under 2 years due to high altitude)
